Expanded RS-485 communication options for the 240 Series temperature modules
240 cryogenic temperature modules new communication protocols

Lake Shore, a DwyerOmega brand, has expanded the communication capabilities of its 240 Series temperature modules with the addition of Modbus RTU and Lake Shore ASCII communication modes over the built-in RS‑485 interface. Available on both the 240‑2P and 240‑8P models, these new protocol options give users greater flexibility when integrating temperature measurements into industrial automation, process control, and custom data acquisition systems.

Previously, RS‑485 communication on the 240 Series was limited to PROFIBUS‑DP. With firmware version 2.4, users can now select from three communication modes on the RS‑485 interface:

  • PROFIBUS-DP for existing industrial network deployments
  • Modbus RTU multidrop for integration with PLCs and industrial controllers
  • Lake Shore ASCII point-to-point communication for custom software and embedded system applications

The addition of Modbus RTU support simplifies integration with one of the most widely used industrial communications standards, making it easier to incorporate the 240 Series into existing automation architectures. At the same time, the Lake Shore ASCII communication mode provides a straightforward command-response interface for developers building custom control and monitoring solutions.

These expanded communication options are particularly beneficial for users working with PLCs, industrial PCs, single-board computers (SBCs), and custom automation software. By providing multiple protocol choices over the same hardware interface, the 240 Series can be more easily adapted to a wider range of control systems and deployment environments.

The 240 Series temperature modules deliver accurate and reliable temperature monitoring in laboratory, industrial, OEM, and research applications. Support for multiple sensor types, compact packaging, and flexible communications options make them well suited for system integration projects where dependable temperature measurement is critical.

Firmware version 2.4 and later includes support for these new communication modes and will be installed on units shipped after August 31, 2026. Existing customers can upgrade earlier units in the field using the MeasureLINK 240 firmware updater, available from the MeasureLINK 240 software page.
